The Digg Categories just suck

March 1st, 2007 by Jeff Kee | Blog Consulting and Advice, Rants | leave a response, or trackback

Is it just me, or does everybody else often have a hard time finding a category for your Digg submissions?

Their categories are sometimes too specific, and there aren’t enough of them. I find myself debating what category is the closest to what I am about to submit, and it’s very difficult.

Anybody agree with me? The Digg Categories are so hard to choose from and poorly organized.

Here’s a list  of a few items they should be adding :

  • Funny Stories (NOT in the video section)
  • Reviews (a whole Reviews Category, and then sub-categorize for websites, stores, service providers such as cell phone or computer chains)
  • Web Design and SEO ( right now they have “Design” and “Programming” - that’s kinda obscure)

Yeah. Anything else you can think of?

I don’t think Digg sucks - but the mentality of most of it’s users does!

You forgot to add the John Chow catergory. Or maybe the Jeff Kee category and a sub category of “Helpful web advice for NOOBS”…I would probably read that for sure :)

Sorry, I didn’t mean to change up names to get a second link, but for SEO reasons, I want to use both names on everything (I have both on Chow’s site), so I will no longer be using Jane.

Sorry bout taking two spots guys.

Thats OK, you deserve two spots.. especially considering you and Kumiko will be doing a joint review of the OhMiBod on video just for me…

Yes, I do think that the Digg categories are really messed up. Most of the stories I have submitted just don’t belong in any of their categories!

I agree, I have never understood why they don’t have more cats.

They should either :

Have more categories
Have less categories but generalize them more.

I don’t even pay attention to the categories when I’m reading. But I’ve had the same problem trying to find a suitable category when submitting. Don’t forget they started of as a tech news site and everything else was sort of just tacked on.
