Superbowl - A marketeer’s dream!
The Superbowl kicking off very soon, and quite frankly, I don’t even know which 2 teams are playing, nor do I know where it is hosted. I didn’t even know it was this weekend until a few days ago. Last night I watched the Canucks play the Flams, and the Sens against the Leafs. That’s NHL talk, in case you didn’t notice.
Regardless of the fact that I am not much of a football fan (I am a harsh hockey fan and a soccer fan!!!), it’s still a valuable resource for me and here is why :
The Superbowl is perhaps one of the greatest sports events in North America. In terms of its exposure and popularity, this poses a great value for all people in marketing. The value of commercials during the Superbowl is amazing. And consequently, the amount of money TV stations make with this is amazing (try $2.6M per 30 seconds on average). But also, remember that because of that reason, you see some of the most high-end advertisements in North America at this point. The Monday after Superbowl, statistically, is the day with the highest rate of absence from work for Americans too. That just says it.
All the big guys take out their big guns. It reminds me of the World Cup season last year - in between the World Cup soccer games in 2006, I’ve witnessed some of the most organic, most vibrant, and most impactful commercials ever imaginable! The World Cup is the world’s most watched thing EVER in history, believe it or not. And the Superbowl is the shrunken North American version of it. It is one of the most expensive advertisement space available, and all the best advertisements make it through! Who would put up a cheap ad for such a prestigious spot? They’re all so great with awesome visuals and a great impact.
As somebody who is involved in design and production of marketing material and websites etc., this is a great time to learn from the best of the best.
So, even if you are not a Superbowl fan, try to catch it because the goodies in between alone are enough to be worth it. Trust me.

hooorayyy superbowl!!! :D:D:D
The problem is, don’t Canadian advertisers have dibs over the American ads here in Canada? I havn’t watched the Superbowl in a while but if I remember - you were more likely to see a medium-budget Canadian commercial than a high budget American one.
Oh well, you can always search for the commercials on YouTube.
Yes, it is true that according to CRTC regulations, a good portion of the advertisements must be replaced with Canadian content. This applies to radio, television universally regardless of seasons.
Now do keep in mind that due to a wider spread of HDTV and Satellite TV, a lot of Canadians have access to American channels raw. And many bars, I believe, spend the extra cash to get the American channels on. I guess it’s because it’s just so much more vibrant and rich in its content.
Also to note is the fact that a lot of large corporations are spending the extra dough on creating a Canadian edition of the advertisements so that they can be broadcasted anyhow!
If you didn’t see the American commericals, i know there is a website around that has them all on there! I’ll try and find the link!
