Just for FYI, here is my protien breakdown for one day...

egg whites (morning)
protien shake (post workout)
steak (flank) (lunch)
chicken breast (3pm meal)
salmon (dinner)
canned tuna (night)
yogurt (late night snack)
milk (whenever)

And yes, this is for a single day! I usually skip the tuna meal cause I'm too full.

I am definitely in favour of eating natural food more than relyign on artificial substitutes, but life's busy and we don't all get to cook every meal and such. It's a great way to add the extra bit if you feel the need, and that's what the shakes are for. I drink 1 or 1.5 servings a day on average. Today I had a nice salmon burger loaded with veggies on whole wheat bread. I love that stuff.

Great posts. I usually have about 2-3 protein shakes a day just because i'm so busy; the convenience factor is huge. If I had a little more time in the day I wold probablly break it down to 1 shake a day and more meals.

Very informative post! When I first started working out, I wasn't using any protein supplements, and truth be told, I wasn't eating enough natural protein either. The results were disappointing - I was losing weight, but had no luck bulking up. Next time around, I started taking 2 protein shakes a day (one before my workout, one after), and the results were fantastic. Even without eating much chicken or tuna (and only milk in my cereal), I saw REALLY impressive gains. Not bad for about $25/mo (the cost of the Whey Protein).

Jeff, the nuts are the good fat though! BTW, my typical breakfast is 8 egg whites, 1 apple, 1 orange, 15 nuts.

For eggs, you should just eat the egg whites, not the yolks. Then it's the leanest protein you can find. BTW, check out Nectar protien shakes, they taste real good and are easy to drink and mix.

BTW, I have a nutritionist plan my meals and I weigh 145lbs. His suggested intake was like 200g protien a day! 8 meals! I just couldn't eat that much.

Ya i'll watch out for that. They say 1g per pound of body weight is optimal if you're active. So for me it should be 180 g a day of protein, which is quite a bit.

Some people's body can't deal with all the protein. If you find yourself having a lot more pimples or back pain by the kidneys then cut back. Otherwise you will definitely want to take at least 100g of protein a day.

I mix it up - I just dont' like the idea of adding that extra fat to that extra protein supply that I take. When I eat regular food there's enough fat in there as it is, as well as protein etc.

i think when you factor in everything you take in on a daily basis, it can even out to what you get from one protein shake. for instance, my roomie is a health nut (actually, come to think of it, they BOTH are!) and she keeps nuts and other proteins around the house. funny thing is she knows exactly how many almonds, etc, she can have in one day. if you look at your total intake per day, it might be better overall to incorporate these alternate sources of protein. plus, they'll taste better :D
