Just PLUG IT IN??? NOOOOO!!!

Many of you would have noticed that my blog posts were quite scarce the last 2 days. Well, by scarce I mean once a day only. I usually write 2~3, and my record day I put up 5 posts in 1 day.

There were two reasons for this :

  1. I’ve been very busy with contracts and projects, as well as printing deadlines and ad submission deadlines. It was nuts. On top of that I had to help my friend move on Sunday.
  2. My internet has not been working. This really really really pissed me off.

I guess the internet not working was the real reason. When I’m desperately trying to get as much work done at my clients’ and my associate’s office (that I get to use for free any time) and also try to do my blog activities, it stretches me quite thin.

I thought it was the router’s issue, because I could not figure it out after many reboots of the cable modem and the router, so I was planning on grabbing another router today. And then I realized the problem.

router-u-link.jpgMy roommate had plugged in 1 lose end of an Ethernet cable, that was coming out of Port 1 of the router, to Port 4. It was a U connection - the cable came out of 1 end of the router and ended back in the router again. I’ve seen this done many months before with other roommates, and you know what that does? It limits your connectivity to the internet to a few seconds at a time. You connect - your MSN logs in, you get to the Google homepage (if you’re lucky, the whole page will load) and then the connection loses its connectivity.

The lose Ethernet wire was there in case I needed to hook up my laptop via wire to reset the wireless settings, change the password to the router, etc. and for any other maintenance purposes. Also, my former roommate had a desktop in that room so he ran it off that wire. It was meant to stay un-connected at the other end.

So here’s a tip for everybody : DO NOT JUST PLUG-IN THE LOSE END OF ANY CABLES TO THE NEAREST RECEPTACLE.

Jeff you’re so Geek! Usually you’ll hear about car guys that have problems with people who don’t know how to change a tire. We laugh at people who don’t know about routers. YOu know?

Yup I’m a geek haha…

although, a guy who doesn’t know how to change his tires or engine oil is a bit odd too. I laugh at those haha.
