DON’T TOUCH MY SCREEN
I remember a while ago I was having a meeting with this woman, and we were looking at my laptop screen to review some ideas for a website.
She kept touching and poking my screen with her long nails. Even if she had short nails or no nails I wouldn’t want her touching my screen in any case whatsoever. It’s perhaps one of my greatest pet-peeves. Also, I had somebody at my place who wanted to point out things on my TV, and would touch the TV’s screen with her fingers. .
Please don’t do that. It leaves smudges of your fingerprint. With nails, it may even scratch it. And besides, LCD screen surfaces are not exactly made out of titanium – I hate to see my LCD cells change in color as you rub against it, and I’m concerend it might permanently damage my screen in some way. It costs a few hundred bucks to replace a bad screen. And even if it doesn’t get to that, I still don’t want to have to clean my screen twice as often.
I don’t mean to be prejudiced but it’s always women who do that – and my assumption is that because of the differences of interest between the genders, women do not understand the obsession and the love that men have for their electronics and toys. I rarely see a woman who is concerend about scratching the surface of an expensive car by leaning on it with your jeans on (whereas a lot of guys do freak when somebody does that because it affects the wax layer. I NEVER lean on or sit on anybody’s car body if it’s an expensive car). It is understandable – guys love our electronics and cars, whereas girls don’t share the same love (or obsession, whatever you may call it). So, ladies, please don’t touch your guyfriends’ laptop or TV screens!Â
Here’s what I did today :

That’s right, I put signs on both my LCD TV and my laptop asking people politely to NOT touch the screen surface. Hopefully this will make me frown less.

Jeff, I have two kids, now ages 8 & 6, they grew up with computers all around the house & office, they must have been told a million times not to touch the screen! Now they are old enough to know better & I always laugh when I hear them give their friends trouble when they touch the screens of their own computers.
Haha well trained kids! Good habits should start early.
Jeff, that’s about as funny as it gets. I hear you!
haha yeah it’s a pain, i hope the caption will deter people.
I think it does the trick.
LOL…well, I’m not sure about this being gender specific because I’m the same exact way and I have guy friends (not in the blogging or web realm) that have no clue about computer etiquette. When borrowing my computer, it was like hearing a nutcracker in full effect. I had to make sure my keys were still on the keyboard from the pounding fingers.
yeah guys are heavy fingered.. i type pretty hard too but my laptop is over a year old and still good.. although some of the keys have faded away (mainly the M)
My M seems to be in rough shape as well, another reason to get a new computer!
Im debating between a 17″ macbook pro and another toshiba satellite..
its a tough one..
I’m using a loaner computer now that I like a lot! It’s a hp pavillion entertainment PC. Great toys such as a lighted touch pad for quick play features.
But I would agree…If I were to purchase one soon, which it looks like I probably will, it’ll probably be an i book.
I always preferred the japanese brand laptops tho.. the HP brand- seems kinda clunky sometimes with just too much shit.. I LOVE toshiba laptops.
you wearing out the M from all the times you’ve been spelling “May” ???
Oh yes jane, all my love letters for you hahaha
I recently had a boss lecture me about touching my OWN laptop screen because she felt it was unprofessional (the keys scratch against it, so rather hopeless keeping it in good condition). Didn’t there used to be an actual problem though with touching old monitors and static?
Hello
This is one of the sweetest blog postings I have ever read. I hope to mean the world to someone one day to.
i don’t like ignorant people especially when they are in front of the computer screen. they will poke or point at it, why not use the mouse pointer instead their finger. screen is only for viewing not for touching. noobs!
